The Jack Petchey Award

Jack Petchey Award Winner, March 2009

The Jack Petchey Award for March has gone to Ansar Meah (A2NW), because of his involvement in community projects and volunteering, including London Tigers Youth, which engages with young people from the Bangladeshi community. Ansar has managed to balance this active involvement with a hugely improved attendance and achievement record.  The £200 that Ansar has been awarded will go towards an inter-tutor group and a staff vs student 5- a- side football tournament. Well done, Ansar!

Jack Petchey Award Ceremony- January 2010

On January 18th, some of our Jack Petchey Award winners from last year, and supporters from WMSF, attended the Jack Petchey West London awards evening at Kensington Town Hall. It was an inspirational evening, celebrating the achievements of young people from a range of schools in West London.

The photograph shows some of our student award winners, Ruby, Eman and Christopher, with the Mayor of Hammersmith.

William Morris Sixth Form is very fortunate in being involved with the Jack Petchey award scheme, which enables us to recognise those students who are young leaders or who set an excellent example to others. This could be through the help they give to others, through their involvement in a particular area, such as sports leadership or the Student Union, or simply because they are role models in the way that they approach their studies. A student award winner is nominated each month; he or she gets a framed certificate and also chooses how to spend the £300 Jack Petchey monthly grant, for the benefit of the school. In addition, once a year the staff and students vote for a staff leader award winner. This can be any member of staff, not necessarily a teacher. He or she gets a grant of £1,000 to spend within the school. Our current staff award winner is Susie Jolly, one of our very experienced and dedicated Careers and Work Experience Advisers. There is an annual West London Jack Petchey award celebratory event, at which the leader awards are given and to which the student achievement award winners from the previous year are invited and at which they are awarded medals by representatives from the Jack Petchey Foundation.
