Mathematics

Introduction

Nearly half of all the students study mathematics across levels 1 to 3. Our curriculum ranges from intensive support at level 1 in basic functional numeracy, through to further mathematics at advanced level. We also offer a large GCSE programme where students will typically improve on their school GCSE performance by 1 or more grades.

With over one hundred students studying maths at A-level, there is a great enthusiasm about the subject among students and teachers alike.  This year we have twelve in our AS Further Maths group, reflecting the increasing popularity of maths at advanced level.  Use of Maths AS is also on offer here – this subject complements Humanities and Science subjects, concentrating on the application of maths to real-life situations.

Every maths classroom has an interactive whiteboard.  The maths department prides itself on the variety of resources available to appeal to all types of learners, from computer based worksheets to group games and whole-class competitions.  Support outside lessons is available in the form of workshops – 5 hours a week – and extra lessons where necessary.
