If English is not your first language or you need to improve your grammar or your study skills, there are various resources available to help you gain confidence.
Spellzone
Spellzone is an internet spelling programme written especially for older students and adults. With Spellzone you can develop an understanding of spelling rules, do interactive tests that are marked online, find out how to learn and remember difficult words, work at different ability levels and tackle words that computer spellcheck’s miss! Tense buster
This Online grammar exercises (10 user licences). This software allows you to create your own user account, choose your level (from the very basic to advanced) and practise your language skills.
Study Skills Success
This an online study programme for more advanced use (50 user licences).
Go to the 'Grammar' section, then one of these activities:

- Practise using modals
- The language of cause and effect
- Six effects of grammar

LRC Resources
- The LRC has many fiction books that are designed for students who have English as a second language. Reading this kind of fiction is not only excellent for your English vocabulary, but it's also fun!
- To see a list of these books, first of all open our Heritage Online Catalogue.
- Now type in these words: "fiction and quick reads" and hit return.
- Find a book that you like, then pick it up from the LRC's North Room.
- You can also browse through the 'Quick Reads' book stand in the North Room.
Internet Resources
BBC Skillswise
This great interactive site helps you practise your grammar, spelling, vocabulary etc. You can choose your level and play lots of fun learning games. You can also improve your number skills on the same site.
The Internet Grammar of English
This is the grammar tutorial for UCL university which has been designed to help their undergraduates improve their English. It is rich with explanations and exercises which can help you improve your language skills. To quote the site - " The study of grammar helps us to communicate more effectively. Quite simply, if we know how English works, then we can make better use of it."
